Are you Stressed?

It is estimated that 70-90% of doctors visits are for stress related disorders. Stress has been linked to fatigue, insomnia, heart disease, high blood pressure, weight gain, hair loss and a compromised immune system.

Life is busy, especially if you are striving for success and have multiple calls on your time. The pace of life seems to be increasing and there never seems to be enough hours in the day to complete all tasks to your high level of execution.

Managing work, money, family and health becomes a stressful juggling act and you feel that control is slipping through your fingers and you are being pulled in too many directions at once.

But help is in sight. The first thing to do is recognise the signs that stress is becoming an issue for you. Check out the lists below to see what symptoms of stress are showing up for you.

Some typical signs and symptoms of stress are;

Mental

  • Trouble thinking clearly
  • Memory problems
  • Can’t concentrate
  • Low attention span
  • Poor judgement
  • Anxious or racing thoughts
  • Constant worrying

Emotional

  • Irritability or short temper
  • Agitation, unable to relax or keep still
  • Moodiness
  • Easily upset or hurt
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Sense of loneliness and isolation
  • Depression or general unhappiness

Physical

  • Headaches, trembling, sweating
  • Tightness in muscles
  • Aches and pains
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea, dizziness
  • Chest pain, rapid heartbeat
  • Lack of sleep, poor, disrupted sleep

Behavioural

  • Isolating yourself from others
  • Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax
  • Eating more or less
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities
  • Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing).

N.B. These signs and symptoms of stress can also be caused by other psychological and medical problems. If you experience any of these, it is important to see your doctor—as they can help you determine whether or not your symptoms are stress-related.

The key to managing stress in your life is centered on the concept of control. What is within your control and what is not within your control. Regaining control may seem like a tall order but you have a lot more control than you might think. In fact, the simple realization that you are in control of your life is the most important concept to understand.

Effective stress management is about learning to regain control: of your lifestyle, thoughts, emotions, and the way you deal with problems. No matter how stressful your life seems, there are steps you can take to relieve the pressure and get back into the driving seat.

"Stress just seemed to sneak up on me and it wasn’t until I got sick I realized I needed to do something about it. Once I learned how to identify what I was stressing over and how to manage the excess burdens in my life, I became a much nicer person to be around. Averil really did work wonders."
